About

A UI UX case study for Summer of Bitcoin focused on designing a smooth, trustworthy and educational first Lightning payment experience in a Bitcoin wallet.

What is Coin Up?
Coin Up is a Bitcoin wallet concept designed to help new users complete their first Lightning payment with confidence. First-time users often struggle to tell Lightning and on-chain payments apart, fear sending funds to the wrong address and feel unsure whether a payment actually went through.

Design Process

My approach was to make every step of the payment clear and predictable, explain Lightning in simple language and build trust through transparent feedback, while keeping users in control of their funds.

The project began with problem exploration and research into how new users experience Bitcoin payments. I looked at transaction anxiety, Lightning adoption and common usability gaps in crypto wallets, and analysed existing wallet flows to find where users lose confidence.

I then mapped the user journey from wallet discovery to payment confirmation, identified the key decision points, risk points and trust moments, and built a user flow and paper wireframes. These became high-fidelity screens for the full journey, from the home screen to scanning a QR code, entering an amount and confirming the payment.

Solution

The solution was a guided Lightning payment flow with clear network selection, QR scan and recipient search, a simple amount and review step, and a confirmation screen that shows the payment status.
The home screen separates Lightning and on-chain balances and includes learning support, so new users understand what is happening without leaving the flow.

Result

A first Lightning payment that feels simple, transparent and trustworthy for new Bitcoin users.
The final design turns a confusing first transaction into a clear, step by step flow. Users always know which network they are using, who they are paying and whether the payment succeeded. By combining plain language, clear feedback and learning moments, Coin Up helps new users complete their first Lightning payment with confidence.
